Skagen, located on the northern tip of the Jutland peninsula, attracted Nordic artists from the end of the 19th century through the early 20th century, where they formed an international artists’ colony. The painters who worked in Skagen took the Naturalist approach. Their works were considered to be revolutionary by the Danish art world at the time, which dubbed them a “Modern Breakthrough”. This exhibition commemorates the 150th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Japan and Denmark, and will feature 59 important works from the Art Museum of Skagen and introduce the Skagen Painters that represent the best of modern Danish art.
